Words haven’t always had standard spellings or meanings. How we use words can change over time, and sometimes we must read between the lines with our modern eyes. The gravestone of Mehuman Hinsdell notes “twice captivated by Indian salvages”. He survived that and lived to age 63, dying May 9, 1756 and buried in Old Deerfield Cemetery, Deerfield, Massachusetts.
