Susanna Jayne’s headstone is one of the most ornamented and famous gravestones of the 18th century. Death & mortality (the skeleton) stands in the middle of Heaven (angels) & the Underworld (bats) wearing a laurel wreath (victory), bearing a scythe (reaping) while holding the sun and earth or possible moon (beginning & end). Carved by Henry Christen Geyer of Boston, this is but a part of the art from this amazing gravestone. Mrs. Jayne exited this world August 8, 1776 at the age of 45. Old Burial Hill, Marblehead, Massachusetts. There are two hooks embedded on the back for hanging.
